Are you free, really free? The US celebrates July 4 as Independence Day in the US with parades and fireworks.
Are you free? Really free in your finances? As a young woman, I lived a frugal life and hesitated to spend money. I restricted money for fun and relaxation. I had to save, buy a car, and buy a home. I felt like a slave to the budget and accounted for every penny spent including the money for a postage stamp. Now I work to lead a more balanced life in my finances.
Perhaps, you’re the opposite. But are you free? Really free? You spend money on a whim. Perhaps you ruined your credit and the purchase of a car or a home seems impossible.
Are you free? Really free in your interpersonal relationships? “Christine” felt rage toward her husband because of his physical, emotional, and financial abuse of her. She wouldn’t speak up for fear of more abuse, but deep down she resented him.
“Geraldine” had a boss who humiliated her in front of her coworkers. She wouldn’t complain for fear he would fire her. She felt discouraged, defeated, and depressed.
Are you free? Really free in your spiritual life? For years, if good things happened, I took credit for them. If something bad happened, I blamed God. Where was he? Why didn’t he stop it from happening? Didn’t he love me?
Perhaps you can identify with my former spiritual life. I’ve learned that God is the same. He is good and doesn’t change. You and I live in an imperfect world with imperfect bodies and imperfect people. Bad things will happen, but God didn’t cause them.
2 Timothy 1:7: “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.”
God, help me to exercise the power, love and self-discipline you gave me to be free, really free. Amen.
What will you do this week to be free, really free in your financial, interpersonal, or spiritual life?
