How do you get and maintain peace? You may feel overwhelmed with your job outside the home. When you return home, you don’t get peace. You must fix dinner, do the laundry and dishes, and help your children or grandchildren with homework.
Maybe you have elderly parents with a life-threatening disease, and you care for them or worry about them. You face an endless round of their medical appointments and trips to the pharmacy, the lab, or the ER.
You may also be concerned about your finances, goals, or retirement.
You may wonder if peace is possible with the fast pace of living, the pile of mail and email, and your desire to keep up with family and friends on social media.
However, in John 14:27, Jesus says, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
You get and maintain peace because Jesus gives it to you. Jesus knew you would be inclined to have a troubled heart and to be afraid. He wanted you to know that when he gives you peace, he doesn’t take it away from you or threaten to do so. Peace is his gift to you, and all you have to do is accept it.
How do you do that? Start your day with what I call “the trio”—Bible reading, prayer, and praise and worship.
First, I get up earlier to read three chapters from the Bible daily. If you read one chapter, one Psalm, or one Proverb, you will be closer to peace than before.
Second, I pray and ask God to give me peace and help me maintain it. Tell God how you feel and that you need peace. He knows anyway and wants you to have it.
Third, I play praise and worship music. If you play praise and worship music, you will sense God’s presence, peace, and power.
During my most difficult seasons of life, I read my Bible and prayed in the morning and again at night. I played praise and worship music day and night. It calmed my heart and soul, and it can do the same for you.
The next time you feel like you can’t get and maintain your peace, choose one or all of “the trio” to help you.
John 14:27: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
Prayer: Dear God, my heart is troubled, and I am afraid. Please give me your peace and help me maintain it. Amen.
