Male cardinal on bare branch of tree in winter

How Can Birds Contribute to Your Peace?

How can birds contribute to your peace? Have you ever asked yourself this question? I have and know that birds contributed to my peace.

When I moved into my home, more than ten years ago, I bought a shepherd’s hook with two hooks for bird feeders. I placed that hook in front of the dining room window. Soon the male and female cardinals found their way to one of my feeders.

To my delight, different woodpeckers, the Carolina wren, the chickadee, the tufted tit mouse, and the blue jay also feasted at the feeder. The gold finches discovered the upside-down feeder with thistle just for them.

As I paid bills, wrote chapters for a book, or short presentations, I would look out the window at the birds. They seemed content no matter what kind of bird seed I placed in the feeders. They serenaded me and entertained me.

When they perched on the shepherd’s hook, they looked peaceful. I thought, Why can’t I take breaks throughout the day and meditate? Why can’t I be the person I am and not compare myself to others? Why can’t I see my value and the contributions I can make?

Because I took the time to answer those questions, the birds contributed to my peace. When I invited other writers to spend a day in my home to write, they wanted to sit by the dining room window. They mentioned that the birds calmed them down and stirred up their creativity.

Sixteen years ago, I went through aggressive cancer treatment. After the diagnosis, I lost my peace. I was scared, but I sat at the dining room table and watched the birds.

God used the birds to remind me of Matthew 6:26–27: “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?”

I thought about those two verses and once again, the birds contributed to my peace. If you can’t afford a shepherd’s hook or bird seed, that’s okay. Take a walk in your neighborhood or at a park. Watch the birds as they fly from tree to tree. Notice how they perch and listen as they sing. Be ready to let the birds contribute to your peace.
