Have you experienced the storms of life? Were those storms physical ones like Hurricane Matthew this past weekend? Maybe they were the storms of loss, change, or some other challenge.

As the winds of Hurricane Matthew howled and the rains deluged the East coast, I couldn’t sleep because of the noise from the storm. I wondered what the effects of the storm would be on the streets, neighborhoods, and power.

Although it was still windy and raining on Sunday morning, I woke up relieved to find the power on in my neighborhood, my home intact, and most trees still standing.

One couple did have a tree split and fall on their home. A neighbor had an uprooted tree that fell toward the street and spared her home. img_1282

My friend, “Maggie,” reminded me that the storm of losing her husband seven years ago left her and the children feeling sad and empty. She said, “As the anniversary of his death gets closer, our pain gets worse.”

I said, “I understand. As the Thanksgiving and Christmas season get closer, the storm of losing my mother and my son makes me sadder. Their absence becomes more difficult.”

We both agreed that eating right, getting enough sleep, and daily exercise help to face the storms of life. We also agreed that daily Bible study, prayer, and meditation also help.

My friend, Sharron, received a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer stage 1. However, when she had surgery, the doctor said, “It’s stage 4 and has metastasized to the liver.”

That diagnosis has changed life for her, her family, and friends.

What will you do to cope when the storms of life change your life?

Psalm 88:9: “My eyes are dim with grief. I call to you, Lord, every day; I spread out my hands to you.”

Prayer: Dear God, I don’t always get a warning about the storms of life. Help me turn to you when they come. Amen.
