3 Steps The Divorced Can Take for a Vacation

Three steps the divorced can take for a vacation. At first glance, that may seem unrealistic with bills on your desk. You don’t want to think about more expenses. I get it. However, the next vacation time will come as fast as the one this year did. If you would like to take a vacation or Christmas or spring break with family or friends, plan for it with these three steps.

The first step the divorced can take for a vacation is to plan something close to home.

My friend lost her husband through widowhood. I lost mine through divorce. I looked at the first step the divorced can take for a vacation, and I planned something close to home for Christmas. That way we could save gas fare, money, and time. We stayed at a hotel within forty-five minutes of home.

Hotel discount packages with a pool and other amenities

Furthermore, I searched for discounts through AAA (the American Automobile Association), the military, the bank, the credit union, and organizations in which I have a membership. I found an outstanding discount, and my friend and I split the cost of the room.

We also had a discount for our meals at the hotel and enjoyed the hot chocolate, hot tea, fresh fruit, and other free food available throughout the hotel.

Single parent family meeting

If you’re a single parent through divorce or widowhood, consider a family meeting after dinner to discuss possible places to visit and the cost. Consider whether to go during Christmas or spring break. That will lead you to the next step.

The second step the divorced can take for a vacation is to start a vacation savings account.

I took the second step and started a vacation savings account years ago when I became a single parent. A special on plane fare came up in October. It was so cheap that I called the airlines to ensure it wasn’t a misprint. It wasn’t. I didn’t have a charge card in my name yet and drove to the airport to buy tickets for me and my child to visit my family.

Children’s contribution according to their age

You, too, can start a vacation savings account and save a certain amount each month. If you have children at home, they can also contribute a pre-determined amount monthly. Depending on their age, they can do chores or yard work at home, for the neighbors, or family friends.

On the other hand, you may be divorced or widowed without children or grandchildren. You can determine your monthly contribution based on your destination.

If you have children or grandchildren and hold monthly family meetings, you can determine the savings required based on where you and your family plan to go. Then, rejoice as you check the growth of that fund.

As a visual, make a chart to place on the refrigerator and mark the progress of your savings with a magic marker or a colored pencil.

I receive a monthly statement that reports the growth of my vacation savings account.

3 Steps The Bereaved Can Take When Christmas Is Difficult

The third step the divorced can take for a vacation is to include meals and snacks.

My friend and I also had a discount for our meals at the hotel and enjoyed the hot chocolate, hot herbal tea, fresh fruit, and other free food available throughout the hotel.

As you include money for meals and snacks, think of individually wrapped items that will survive the trip. Since I like to eat a little at a time, I travel with personal size boxes of raisins, protein bars, mixed nuts, and small bags of popcorn. If I travel by car, bus, or train, I add bottled water, protein drinks, and fresh fruit.

You, too, can pack your own snacks and water. If your vacation plan includes children, they can select a small backpack on sale or at a thrift store and decide what snacks they want to take in their backpack.

As part of your plan, you may wish to hold a monthly family meeting and discuss meals and snacks at one of those meetings. When you do, check inexpensive restaurants near your destination and welcome input from each person in the family.

Before you leave, check on your cell phone for apps with discount coupons or specials at restaurants in the vicinity of your destination.

If you live close to a port, perhaps you can take advantage of a last-minute special. Unless you get off the ship in port, you won’t need to worry about meals, snacks, and beverages. The cruise ship will provide plenty of food and beverages with an unbelievable variety around the clock.
