Alone and Lonely? What Can You Do with Those Feelings?
by Yvonne Ortega

Alone and lonely? What can you do? The Wednesday after Easter, my phone rang about 9:00 pm, and I heard my brother say two words, “Dad passed.” Shock overwhelmed me.

My last living parent was unexpectedly gone. He had been smiling, joking, and suddenly stopped talking. He had breathed his last earthly breath and his first heavenly one. Perhaps without warning. you’ve also lost a beloved parent or other loved one.

I felt joy for Daddy that he would never have a massive heart attack again, never go through dialysis again, and never be in the hospital or a nursing home again.

On the other hand, I would have to go on living without him. I felt like an orphan alone and lonely.

Bible Study

When I feel alone and lonely, my thoughts turn to the Bible and God’s precious promises. For example, Psalm 146:9 says, “The Lord watches over the foreigner and sustains the fatherless and the widow . . .”

I am now among the fatherless. My earthly father lives in heaven, but my heavenly Father God promised to sustain me. The Lord will uphold me, protect me, and provide for me.

Praise and Worship Music

To avoid the bottomless pit of feeling alone and lonely, I play praise and worship music. It calms my heart and soul. I listen to “One Day at a Time, Sweet Jesus,” one of the songs the church played at Daddy’s service. I listen to it on youtube.com at https://youtu.be/tkkDbsxctn8and also to “Trust His Heart” at https://youtu.be/XWk8DRwDYDc

Prayer Support

After my brother’s call, I asked on Facebook for prayer for me and my family. One friend saw my request and called me within a minute. God used her to minister comfort, encouragement, and hope to me. My prayer partner did the same. How will you ask for prayer support?

Grief Group

When I lost my mother, I joined GriefShare, a support group for those who’ve lost a loved one. Feeling alone and lonely without my last living parent, I will go again. What will you do?

Psalm 146:9: “The Lord watches over the foreigner and sustains the fatherless and the widow . . .”

Prayer: Dear God, I feel alone and lonely. Help me believe that you will sustain me. Amen.

What one step will you take this week to process your feelings of aloneness and loneliness?
