Daddy's Humorous Take on NutsDaddy’s Humorous Take on Nuts

Daddy’s humorous take on nuts makes me laugh no matter the situation. He was oblivious to raw nuts, whether they were walnuts, almonds, or pecans. Let’s look first at his humorous take on peanuts.

Daddy’s Humorous Take on Peanuts

I said, “Daddy, peanuts are not nuts. They are legumes.”

That didn’t faze him. He included peanut butter cheesecake in the value of peanuts. He would say, “Peanuts are good for me, and so is the milk in the cheesecake.”

When Daddy and Mom visited for moral support during my divorce proceedings, Daddy said, “We must go to the Peanut Shop in Williamsburg.”

Both Daddy and Mom enjoyed that peanut shop because they could buy an assortment of peanuts, order a peanut butter cheesecake, and go to the ice cream store nearby. No single scoop of ice cream for Daddy.

After Mom’s death and that of my only child, his grandson, Daddy came for Christmas. We grieved the loss of our loved ones. Even in our mourning, we went to the Williamsburg Peanut Shop.

At an amusement park open for the Christmas season, he said, “Look, there’s a store with apples dipped in caramel and covered with chopped nuts. We’ll get fruit and nuts at the same time.” He grinned and said, “You can’t beat that.”

Walnuts

Daddy said, “I don’t care if walnuts might contain antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins. At my age, I can eat what I please.”

Daddy also said, “I won’t waste time on the possible benefits of walnuts.” He ate black walnut ice cream. In his way of thinking, that would do the trick. As he said, “The more black walnut ice cream I eat, the better.”

Almonds

Since I have a dairy allergy, I buy almond milk for my cereal and protein drink, almond flour for baking, and raw almonds as a nutritious snack.

I’m also gluten-intolerant and enjoy almond nut thins (crackers) as a healthy snack.

I reminded my father about my allergies. He stomped and said, “I never had allergies like yours, and I don’t have any now.”

I looked the other way to keep from laughing. Daddy continued and said, “I want the real thing. I can eat almond dessert bars, classic French almond torte, and vanilla Swiss almond ice cream.”

When I remember how he licked his lips with pleasure and any dessert left on the fork or on his fingers, I laugh.

Daddy’s Humorous Take on Pecans

“I didn’t ask you to tell me that pecans possibly contain antioxidants, minerals and vitamins.” Daddy sighed, and said, “I don’t even know what monounsaturated fatty acids and phenolic antioxidants mean. I can barely repeat the words. They sound like a foreign language.”

After a slight pause, Daddy said, “Can you show me solid research that pecans promote brain function and reduce inflammation?”

“No, not now. Maybe one day I can.”

After a big smile, he put his hands on his hips and said, “If that’s the case, I can count pecan cookies, pecan pie, pecan tarts, and pralines as perfect snacks. So what if they have sugar and fat?” As he held his head up and threw his shoulders back, he said, “I exercise every day and maintain my weight.”

To wrap up, when you need a laugh, remember my daddy and his humorous approach to peanuts, walnuts, almonds, and pecans.
