How Do You Manage Your Time After Divorce?

How Do You Manage Your Time After Divorce? by Yvonne Ortega

How do you manage your time after divorce? On occasion, it seems impossible. After dozens of conversations with single again friends and online research, I came up with three steps to manage your time after divorce. Let’s look at them.

The first step is to journal your thoughts and prayers.

When I went through divorce, I admitted I wasn’t God and couldn’t do everything. I sat with a journal and a pen. I prayed and asked God the Father, “What can I reasonably do each day as a divorced person with a full-time job and a teenager at home?”

Imagine my surprise when I needed to sit still and wait for God’s answer. And yet, I did that and received an answer.

Three months ago, after a serious illness, I needed to journal my thoughts and prayers again. With only so much strength and unexpected home repairs, I waited on God’s answer once more.

Have you ever sat alone to journal your thoughts and prayers? Perhaps you did it online in a Word document or a special journal program. That works, too. Simply talk with God about how to manage your time.

Second, set priorities to manage your time after divorce.

Whether you’re a single parent or an empty nester, set priorities. In my first case as a single parent, I set these three priorities: my spiritual life, family life, and full-time job.

In my second situation after a serious illness, I set these three priorities: my spiritual life, family life, and one project to complete at home.

As I looked at my planner each day, I could see if I kept my priorities in order.

Have you ever set priorities? If so, what were they? How did you keep them in order?

Let’s look at the last step now.

The third step is to check for passion.

As a divorced single parent, I desired to strengthen my spiritual life. I wanted to read the Bible each morning, pray, and listen to praise and worship music. I looked forward to my quiet time. My passion continues to grow after my life-threatening illness.

My child came in second after God. In my recent illness, my son had already moved home to heaven. However, I keep in contact weekly with several family members.

When I worked full-time outside of the home, I felt passionate about my work. Every weekday, I knew where I belonged and enjoyed my job. It wasn’t perfect, but God’s ordained assignment for me.

Now I work at home on my fifth book. I’m passionate about the topic, the divorced Christian. This project takes far more time than I thought it would. No wonder God wanted me to trim my tasks and activities.

How much passion do you have for your work? If your answer amounts to little or none, perhaps you’ve taken your job for granted, or God has a better plan for you.
