Obligation to the next president? Obligation is a strong word. What if we didn’t vote for him? Maybe we don’t like him. Perhaps we don’t stand for what he does.

God didn’t say we had an obligation to the next president only if we voted for him, only if we like him, and only if we stand for what he does.

Regardless of who the next president is, those of us who call ourselves Christians have a commitment or obligation to fulfill. Let’s look at it.

OBLIGATION TO THE NEXT PRESIDENT AND GOD’S WORD

“I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority” (1 Timothy 2:1–2a NIV).

Notice that God wants you and me to make petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving for all people — not only for our friends our inner circle of intimate friends, and our family but for everyone.

In Verse 2a, God desires that we pray and thank Him for kings and all those in authority. Because of the pandemic and related circumstances, only God knows when the final votes will be counted. Only God knows when the next president of the United States will be announced. However, we can still pray for those in authority and those who will be.

OBLIGATION AND PURPOSE FOR BELIEVERS

Why would God want believers to pray for all those in authority? If we look at this verse, we can find the answer. It reads, “That we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness” (1 Timothy 2:2b NIV).

Before and after the announcement of the next president, God’s purpose for us to pray is that we may live peaceful, not chaotic lives, and quiet lives, not lives filled with screaming, fighting, or complaining.

Our lives as believers should stand out in all godliness and holiness. We won’t need to wear a sandwich board to announce that we’re Christians. If we will live godly, holy lives, we will glorify Jesus, not ourselves.

OBLIGATION TO THE NEXT PRESIDENT AND PURPOSE FOR NONBELIEVERS

A quick glance at the next verses assures us of God’s purpose for nonbelievers. It reads, “This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:3–4d NIV).

Our Savior wants an open, inclusive, loving relationship with everyone. He doesn’t want to leave anyone out. Therefore, we please God our Savior and pray for the salvation of pre-believers and their knowledge of the truth.

Conclusion

In conclusion, our obligation to the next president is to:

  1. Pray and be thankful for him.
  2. Live peaceful and quiet lives.
  3. Pray for everyone’s salvation.

Next Step

Ask God what he would have you do on election day and forward.
