The pros and cons of technology are many. Let’s look at each pro and then its corresponding con.

The First Pro is the Knowledge and Confidence to Fix a Problem.

The first pro is the knowledge and confidence to fix a problem. My techie friends don’t hesitate to open a laptop, a desktop, or a cellphone. Why they will even work on their large television set and think nothing of it. They can fix their website, blog, and newsletter themselves. They also have the knowledge and confidence to work on their YouTube channel. Their tool box contains large and small tools to repair techie problems. They enjoy the process and may whistle or hum as they work.

The First Con Is the Struggle to Find a Trustworthy Repair Store.

The first con is the struggle to find a trustworthy repair store close by. If the techie person has Apple products, the Apple stores are few and far between, require an appointment, and only on certain days and times.

If the person has Android or other pc products, the stores may still be small, have limited hours and supplies, and not have the technicians to do the work except on certain days and times. The techie individual may know more than the technician and doesn’t like to be without their toys: their cellphone, laptop or desktop.

Second, the Latest Updates Bring Excitement.

Second, the latest updates bring excitement to techie people. They enjoy finding out what was improved and why.

“One evening I did an update as soon as it came in. The next day when I got up, another update awaited me,” my techie friend said.

“What did you do,” I asked.

“I installed it,” he said.

The Second Con Is the Latest Updates Bring Dread.

In the second con, the latest updates bring dread. “What? Another Update? Why can’t they get it right the first time?” That would be my response.

Perhaps as they update one feature, they find other problems.

Dread may also rise within a person because more time may be needed than the person has. The individual may also have another job or medical appointments to keep.

The Third Pro Is Reunions Online with Family and Friends.

The third pro is to reach family and friends. With FaceTime, Google Hangouts, Vimeo, and Zoom, the techie person can reach a few at a time or host a family reunion online.

Distance no longer poses a limitation. Neither does space. As for dietary restrictions, everyone brings their own food to the table. No need to worry about those allergies.

I laugh when I remember my parents’ first use of a cellphone. Mom and Dad  traveled by car to visit me. They weren’t used to having a cellphone on them and didn’t call me to let me know they would arrive a day early. Daddy took Mama to lunch at one of my favorite restaurants by my home. I had wanted to go there for lunch but thought the three of us could go there the next day. We ate dinner there that evening.

The Third Con Is Encounters with Hackers and Other Dangerous People.

The third con is hackers and other dangerous people. Hackers may use their skills to take innocent people hostage. Then they take over the software, promise an immediate fix, and charge exorbitant fees.

They pry on the elderly. They try to convince them that they are their friends and want to help them. Instead they help themselves to the money of the elderly.

If we don’t use the various software programs often, we can forget how to use them. We can also forget the passwords, especially if we change them every three months as recommended.

One summer day, I planned to use Zoom to reach family members. My brother and sister-in-law’s son has Zoom. Neither one of us could remember what to do. So we used a different program.

Prayer

God, help me focus on the pros of technology. When I am in doubt, remind me to wait and ask for help. Help me to move forward only after consulting more than one savvy person and being filled with your peace. Amen.
