When Mother’s Day Is Difficult by Yvonne Ortega

Mother’s Day can be difficult for many reasons. You may be a single mother, who never had a child. You may be like me, a mother who lost her only child. On the other hand, you may have lost more than one child. That makes Mother’s Day difficult.

Perhaps like me, you lost your mother.

If you lost your Mom or children, you must cope with signs and reminders all around you of Mother’s Day, flowers for Mom, jewelry for Mom, chocolates for her special day. Advertisements for brunch and buffet specials for Mom are all around. Those signs, reminders, and advertisements make the event all the more difficult.

You may attend a church service where the pastor asks the oldest mother, the youngest mother, the mother with the most children, and the pregnant mother to stand. Your losses seem more painful during such a service, and that makes Mother’s Day difficult.

And yet, you and I go on. We know we will see our loved ones in heaven, and that comforts us. We continue to move forward because we know our loved ones would want us to do so.

Romans 15:13: “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Prayer: God, I admit that Mother’s Day will be difficult for me. Please help me to get through it and comfort me. Help me to overflow with hope. Amen.

Application: Write this prayer in your journal or your own to get through the day.
