When you don’t know what to do, what do you do? Maybe you stay up all night and worry about it. Perhaps you pace back and forth and ask everyone you know what they would do. I understand. I’ve done all three. However, when you don’t know what to do, you can embrace these three truths.
The First Truth When You Don’t Know What to Do
The late Billy Graham said, “Each life is made up of mistakes and learning, waiting and growing, practicing patience and being persistent” (Billy Graham). In the midst of the divorce, I needed to learn how to find a realtor and affordable housing. I made mistakes, but I learned. I found the right realtor and signed a contract. Before I found a full-time job with benefits, I made more mistakes, but I learned from them. I also needed to find out how to establish credit in my name. I established credit in my name on the second attempt. As Billy Graham said, “Each life is made up of mistakes and learning . . . “
You and I are not perfect. I encourage you to accept the truth that each life is made up of mistakes and learning.
The Second Truth Is Waiting and Growing.
I waited a year before I found the model of house, I could call home. Then I waited six months for it to be finished. After I ordered a kitchen table and chairs, I waited six months for it to be delivered to my new home. The same thing happened when I ordered a clothes washer and dryer. I had a choice: to waste the opportunity of waiting and growing or to take advantage of it. I took advantage of the waiting and growing time. I grew in appreciation of my new home as I took video of the progress almost every day. I grew in appreciation of the easy-care kitchen table and chairs and the convenience of a washer and dryer in the home.
Waiting and growing are easier on your mind, body, and spirit than fighting them. Try that the next time you don’t know what to do.
The Third Truth When You Don’t Know What to Do
The third truth is practicing patience and being persistent. Who wants to practice patience? I admit that’s not my first choice and not my last one either. Many a time, I bit my tongue rather than say what I was thinking. I had to be persistent when I didn’t know what to do. I prayed to focus on God rather than fighting my circumstances. I also played praise and worship music. I took a “time out” and went for a walk or did an aerobics session.
To embrace these truths, experiment with the methods I used or come up with your own.
