white fence to show that good comes boundaries and keeps one safe

I Didn’t Know Good Could Come from Boundaries by Yvonne Ortega

“I didn’t know good could come from boundaries,” a client said. Maybe you’ve said that, too. I understand, but they keep you safe.

I shudder to think of how many thousands grew up thinking the same thing. Thank God he taught me better.

Good from boundaries at home

You probably have at least one lock on your outside doors. With children, grandchildren, or their playmates over, you want to keep them safe.

If you’re home alone, you probably would prefer not to have people going through your home day and night.

You wouldn’t welcome strangers ransacking your home. How many times have you posted a sign on your door to inform the public they can go through your home whenever to take whatever they want? Have you left them 30-gallon bags to make it easier? Why not?

Why do you think people started the “neighborhood watch” programs or installed security cameras? One woman reported thieves pulled into her driveway and emptied her home of everything including the lightbulbs. One neighbor saw a moving van pull up, assumed the other woman was moving, and didn’t question it. Research showed they were in and out in five minutes.

Good from boundaries in a vehicle

Because home is not the only place where you need to be safe, good can come from boundaries in a vehicle. Cars have a VIN–a vehicle identification number to research vehicle history reports including accidents, market value, ownership cost, recalls, and storm damage.

The VIN is usually printed on a sticker on the windshield near the door jamb on the driver’s side door or on the door jamb itself.

If you are shopping for a used car, that information could save you headaches, nightmares, and costly repairs. In horror, a middle-aged woman reported her car stolen from her driveway. Imagine her surprise weeks later when she traveled on business to a city an hour and a half from home and spotted the car. She hopped in and drove it home as her coworker followed her.

For the sake of safety, I would recommend a call to the nearest police station in such a case.

In the Bible

In Joshua 13–21 of the Old Testament, God told Moses the boundaries for the land to be given to each of the twelve tribes. “But to the tribe of Levi Moses gave no inheritance; the Lord God of Israel is their inheritance, just as he said to them” (Joshua 13:33 ESV).

The Temple in the Old Testament was divided into three equal rooms of equal width: the porch or vestibule; the main room of religious service or Holy Place; and the Holy of Holies, the sacred room in which the Ark rested.

The Temple area was divided into various areas for study; sacrifices; libation, (pouring of a liquid as an offering to a spirit, deity, or soul of a person who is deceased; libation during casual social settings or milestone moments, such as weddings) and further divided according to a social hierarchy for gentiles, women, Israelites, Levites and priests.

In the New Testament, Jesus set boundaries with Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human” (Matthew 16:23 NIV).

Jesus also set boundaries about who would enter heaven. “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 7:21 NIV).

Prayer:

God, help me apply these boundaries about home, car, friends, and the Bible to my life. Thank you. Amen.
